The Reserve was first established in 1988 when a captive-breeding program for the Roe Deer was initiated.............From 130$ per room.......(more details and special rates)

Azraq Reserves To get there isn't easy. You just about have to have a car, at the time of writing this, no public transport goes anywhere near Azraq. There used to be a bus from Zarqa north of Amman, but my information is that this service no longer exists. If you head east out of Amman with a rental car you pass the other best known "Desert Castles" of Qasr Hraneh and Qasr Amra on the road going through Muwaggar and arrive at Azraq at the junction with the main Baghdad Highway. The Nature Reserve is close to Azraq al Janubi, and perhaps 3kms from the Castle of Azraq............From 140$ per room.........(more details and special rates)

Mujib Nature ReservesThe Mujib Reserve is the lowest nature reserve in the World, with its spectacular array of scenery near the east coast of the Dead Sea. Dana Guest House Perched on the edge of Wadi Dana, the Guest House offers a breathtaking view of the reserve. It contains nine comfortably furnished bedrooms with private terraces, and good facilities for meetings and conferences.............From 140$ per room......(more details and special rates)
Feynan Lodge This campsite is simpler by comparison to the Rummana camp. The capacity of this camp is 40 visitors per night. The campsite, which is open year round, contains a kitchen, 10 tents, and bathrooms. Each tent is equipped with mattresses, blankets and pillows. Drinking water is also available.......From 110$ per room........(more details and special rates)

Rummana Camping Site The campsite contains 20 large tents, bathrooms and barbecue grills for visitor use. Each tent comes equipped with mattresses and pillows. Shaumari Camping Site The Shaumari Reserve was created in 1975 by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature as a breeding center for endangered or locally extinct wildlife. Azraq

Azraq (Arabic: الأزرق‎) is a small town in the province of Zarqa Governorate in central-eastern Jordan, 100km east of Amman. The population of Azraq was 9021 persons in 2004

History of Azraq

Azraq has long been an important settlement in a remote and now-arid desert area of Jordan. The strategic value of the town and its castle (Qasr Azraq) is that it lies in the middle of the Azraq oasis, the only permanent source of fresh water in approximately 12,000 square kilometres of desert.

The town is located on a major desert route that would have facilitated trade within the region. The Azraq oasis has a long history beginning in the Lower Palaeolithic period. Many Palaeolithic sites have been documented in the Azraq Wetlands Reserve. During the Epipalaeolithic period the oasis was also an important focus of settlement. Nabatean period settlement activity has also been documented in the area. Qasr Azraq was built by the Romans in the 3rd century A.D., and was heavily modified in the Middle Ages by the Mameluks. In the Umayyad period a water reservoir was constructed in southern Azraq. During the Arab Revolt in the early 20th century, Qasr Azraq was an important headquarters for T. E. Lawrence.

Demographics of Azraq

According to the Jordan National Census of 2004, the population of Azraq was 9,021 persons, of whom 7,625 (84.5%) were Jordanian citizens. 4,988 (55.3%) were males, and 4033 (44.7%) females. The next census is schedualed on 2014.

Wildlife reserve in Azraq

Azraq is also notable as being the site of one of Jordan's seven protected nature reserve areas (setup by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature): the Azraq Wetlands Reserve in Azraq al-Janoubi (South Azraq).

The separate and larger Shaumari reserve is also close to Azraq, being only 10km south of the town.

Wadi Mujib

Wadi Mujib is a gorge in Jordan which enters the Dead Sea at 410 meters below sea level. The Mujib Reserve of Wadi Mujib is the lowest nature reserve in the world, located in the mountainous landscape to the east of the Dead Sea, approximately 90 km south of Amman. The 220 square kilometers reserve was created in 1987 by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature and is regionally and internationally important, particularly for the bird life that the reserve supports. It extends to the Kerak and Madaba mountains to the north and south, reaching 900 meters above sea level in some places. This 1,300 meter variation in elevation, combined with the valley's year round water flow from seven tributaries, means that Wadi Mujib enjoys a magnificent biodiversity that is still being explored and documented today. Over 300 species of plants, 10 species of carnivores and numerous species of permanent and migratory birds have been recorded until this date. Some of the remote mountain and valley areas are difficult to reach, and thus offer safe havens for rare species of cats, goats and other mountain animals.

Geography of Mujib

During the last Ice Age the water level of the Dead Sea reached 180 m below sea level, about 230 m higher than it is today. It flooded the lower areas of the canyons along its banks, which became bays and begun to accumulate sediments. As the climatic conditions changed, about 20,000 years ago, the water level of the lake dropped, leaving the re-emergent canyons blocked with lake marl. Most canyons managed to cut through their plugged outlets and to resume their lower courses. However, Wadi Mujib, the biblical Arnon River, abandoned its former outlet by breaking through a cleft in the sandstone. This narrow cleft became the bottleneck of an enormously large drainage basin with a huge discharge. During the years the cleft was scoured deeper and the gorge of Wadi Mujib was formed.

The Mujib reserve consists of mountainous, rocky, and sparsely vegetated desert (up to 800 m), with cliffs, gorges and deep wadis cutting through plateaus. Perennial, spring-fed streams flow down the wadis to the shores of the Dead Sea which lies 400 m below sea-level.

The slopes of the mountaineous land are very sparsely vegetated, with a steppe-type vegetation on plateaus. Groundwater seepage does occur in places along the Dead Sea shore, for example at the hot springs of Zara, which support a luxuriant thicket of Acacia, Tamarix, Phoenix and Nerium, and a small marsh. The less severe slopes of the reserve are used by pastoralists for the grazing of sheep and goats.

The hot springs of Hammamat Ma'in lie close to the borders of the reserve are heavily used for tourism/recreation.

The Jordanian military have a temporary camp in the south of the reserve.

A large dam was recently finished at the bottom of the wadi, where the modern road crosses the river. As a result, a large lake has formed. Today, Wadi Mujib is fed by seven tributaries.
